Nike Releases Its Black Dollars’ Matter Campaign, and I Love It

First of all, Nike ain’t new to this, they are absolutely true to this. Last year, around this time, I decided I needed to address the NikeID Custom Air Huarache that had been weighing on my spirit. As I was trying to fix it with some new shoes because I thought it would make me feel better, completely forgetting Solange’s warning, I pooched (shout out to King of Reads) over to Nike.com and immediately noticed the full array of Blackness prevalent on the site. Their homepage was so steeped in Black culture, I thought for sure Nike.com was tracking me and created this website for my personal consumption just to get me to buy two pair of sneakers. It worked.

This latest ad campaign featuring Serena Williams as the mythic tennis Goddess and Colin Kaepernick as the self-sacrificing Black King was not surprising at all. It would appear that the Nike marketing department took a look at the numbers and realized the one thing I wish more corporations would get – Black people love Nike’s shit and they decided to talk directly to us. And I bet these same statistics show that Black women are far more educated with more disposable income than cis-het men, and Nike decided to really pay attention to what we get excited about – Serena is definitely it. Serena’s ad, which is beautiful in the most beautiful way, is a thinly veiled manifestation of Black Girl Magic. Reflecting the community that keeps you fed in your advertisements is so simple that it makes me wonder why Waffle House and Papa John’s and Chick-Fil-A don’t get it. You would have thought Black Panther’s success would have been enough, Marvel got it. Rumor has it they are planning to refilm scenes of Infinity Wars 2 to show more Wakanda. And I’m buying all the tickets.

Lest we forget, it must be mentioned that Nike is a multi-million (billion maybe?) dollar, international corporation, and corporations cannot, by their very nature, have morals. Corporations exist purely for capitalistic reasons, and there are no morals or high-mindedness in capitalism. To those of you prepared to build an altar to Nike, simmer down (Listen, they allegedly still have those babies in workshops stitching up all this sh*t, so let’s not get it twisted). It’s purely a dollar and cents thing; and honestly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Really, that’s the only good thing about capitalism – my money (or lack thereof) has the potential to influence you to represent my needs. Nike gets it.

To those of you prepared to build an altar to Nike, simmer down (Listen, they allegedly still have those babies in workshops stitching up all this sh*t, so let’s not get it twisted). It’s purely a dollar and cents thing. Click To Tweet

In my lifetime, I have spent a small fortune on Nike products just like most of the people in my family, all my friends, my neighbors, too many of us for them to ignore. Kanye said it best, “We shine because they hate us, floss ’cause they degrade us. We tryna buy back our 40 acres.” And if Nike is going to keep doing this, they can keep getting my money.

Tekashi surrounded by security

Tekashi and Kanye West were at a video shoot in Beverly Hills when shots rang out at 10:25PM

At the stage for the video, a rented $80 million estate,  approximately 8 shots were fired. Although no one was injured, there was damage to the home. At least one bullet destroyed a bedroom window.

Production was halted immediately and Kanye left the scene unscathed. Nicki was supposed to be at the shoot as well but she had not yet made it to the site.

The attack was allegedly a drive-by.

This is the 3rd shooting targeting Tekashi since his post-sentencing celebration. The rapper was charged with the use of a child in a sexual performance. Having only received a sentence of four years probation, it appears someone is unhappy with the judgment.

It is suspected that the shooting could be the result of a beef between Tekashi and YG. The two have been at odds since a video surfaced of Tekashi asking a fan to name a YG song.

A post shared by Blac Chyna (@blacchyna) on

Featuring Yo Gotti and Jeremih, Blac Chyna makes her Rap debut and fans are undecided.

When Chyna posted a photo of her in the studio a year ago, we all thought she was just posing for the gram. Let’s be honest. We’ve known Chyna as a staple in hip-hop but never on the opposite end of the mic. After suffering through some of these Soundcloud rappers, it’s hard to be excited about any new music. In interview Chyna did with XXL a year ago, she stated:

“When I do drop my music, I just don’t want it to be like ‘Okay, Chyna’s taking this for granted, she’s not serious about this.’ I want people to know that I am serious about this and I want to show my progression and my growth and whatnot.”

Many thought that maybe after dating so many rappers, Chyna had picked up a bit of their skill. Unfortunately, most of Twitter seems to agree that Chyna’s debut track is not it. Check out her verse below.

I’m not going to lie, she has potential. Her verse is pretty on brand. After all, she is rapping about scamming:

Talk that talk, but when it’s time to pop a band

You hop up here and you shook

Nothing better than them dollars, man

I fuck up more than your retirement

Chyna has tracks in the works with Swae Lee and has producers lined up to collaborate with her. Showing no signs of disappearing anytime soon, this single is not the last we’ll see of her.

Check out the rest of the song here.

The “Big Bank” rapper is lucky to be alive after his Uber crashes into a San Fernando Valley front yard. TMZ was able to capture footage of YG standing outside of the car looking confused and pictures of the SUV after the crash.

YG was riding in the backseat of the vehicle and didn’t sustain any injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there is no knowledge about how the driver got off the road or what was wrong with him.

As far as we know no one is injured.
