A block party for three prominent HBCUs ended in gunfire last night resulting in injuries for four female students. Around 10:30 PM, shots rang out near the Clark Atlanta University campus during a party to celebrate the beginning of classes.

Roughly 200 students from Clark Atlanta University, Spelman, and Morehouse were caught in the middle of a heated exchange at the Robert W. Woodruff Library. According to Atlanta Police Captain William Rucker, the confrontation was between two groups that were “targeting each other.” Leaving the unlucky students in the crossfire, two women from Clark and two from Spelman were injured.

Since the crime took place so close to student housing, many who attended the fete were unable to go home. The shooter(s) injured four women, shooting one in the chest, another in the leg, and leaving two others grazed by bullets. The students were treated at Grady Health System and there were no casualties. As police begin their search for suspects, they are hopeful surveillance footage from the library contains useful leads.

Karol Sanchez, 16, Staged Kidnapping Says Law Enforcement

Published

on

In a case that gripped New York City, a law enforcement source says Karol Sanchez, a 16 year-old girl, faked her own kidnapping with the help of four male accomplices.

Monday, December 16, Sanchez was seen on surveillance footage being dragged into a car by two unknown men after walking down a New York City street with her mother. NYPD reported the two were approached by a beige 4-door sedan out of which two men got out, dragged the girl into the vehicle, and pushed her mother down to the ground. Tuesday morning state police  issued an Amber Alert for her disappearance citing a reasonable belief that she was in imminent danger, but Tuesday afternoon, Sanchez popped up at the crime scene and identified herself to nearby patrolmen.

Witnesses describe the teenager crossing the street to a cop car and then talking with police at the scene. The NYPD 40th Precinct tweeted on Tuesday “WE HAVE A VICTORY TODAY !! Karol has been found !!! Thank you to all who have worked very hard to track down the people involved in this case !!!”

Now, sources are saying Sanchez admitted to staging her own kidnapping in response to her family considering leaving the U.S. for Honduras, their native home. The girl apparently wanted to stay in America and became unhappy with her mother following this dispute.

Charges have not yet been filed and NYPD stresses that this investigation is ongoing.

Trayvon Martin Killer Sues Martin’s Family for $100m

Published

on

On the evening of February 26, 2012, the lives of Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton changed forever. Their son, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by a neighborhood watchman we would all come to know by name, George Zimmerman. The boy’s death sparked nationwide outrage and led to a multitude of protests and the birth of a movement, Black Lives Matter. Despite Zimmerman disobeying the directions of police dispatcher and the lead detective of the case testifying in court that Zimmerman exaggerated key details of his interaction with Martin, a jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Numerous mugshots of George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin

The acquittal dealt a heartbreaking blow to the deceased boy’s parents and his supporters throughout the country, but the knife in the heart came Wednesday as an attorney for Zimmerman filed a lawsuit against Trayvon Martin’s parents, attorney, and others claiming his character was defamed and a key witness in his 2013 criminal case was an “imposter.”

The lawsuit alleges that various missteps were taken by the family and the prosecution in handling his case. Specifically, Zimmerman claims Martin’s then-girlfriend lied under oath in a conspiracy to aid the State of Florida in obtaining a guilty verdict.

An attorney for the Florida man told the press Wednesday that more details would be given during a press conference scheduled for Thursday, December 5, at a movie theater screening a new film “The Trayvon Hoax: Unmasking the Witness Fraud that Divided America.”

McDonald’s Testing Out a New Chicken Sandwich

Published

on

Just when you thought the fast-food chicken sandwich hype was over, McDonald’s threw a wrench into the conversation this week with the introduction of a new crispy chicken sandwich for their Knoxville, Tennessee and Houston, Texas markets. So far, reviews have been mixed with one Twitter user,  @TheSruAbides, remarking “pretty tasty…8/10 would try again.” Another user, @Whiskey_Jim, had a slightly different opinion saying the sandwich lacks “flavor and the quality of the chicken is sub par.”

The test menu item comes as the “chicken sandwich wars” have slowed down since the re-release of Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen’s popular chicken sandwich. You can remember the debate which captivated the country began with the Louisiana – based chain’s response to a tweet from rival Chick-fil-A. @PopeyesChicken simply asked “… y’all good?” Two weeks after its debut, the sandwich was sold-out nationwide. Nearly four months later, McDonald’s has finally answered the pleas of franchisees and the demand of the public for a premium chicken sandwich addition to its wide-ranging menu.

On August 19, the official Popeye’s Twitter account ignited a fried chicken sandwich frenzy with a single retweet of rival Chick-fil-A’s post.

According to an October statement, McDonald’s has been “inspired by the customer demand.” Its take on the sandwich touts a fried filet topped with butter and pickles on a potato bread bun. It is even reported to have a “sweet flour” breading – no word on whether or not the meat is seasoned, though.

If you have tried the latest entrant in the fried chicken wars, let us know in the comments below!
